The Eagle Speaks

The second of our regular Friday feature here on the blog. Here we highlight some of the stories hitting the headlines in the footballing world this past week.

Palace Signings
The usual rumours of the silly season continue. It looks like the Gosling deal is dead in the water and the Cartlon Cole one has gone all quiet. The Austrian trialist Adthe Nuhiu has signed for Sheffield Wednesday today so the closet signing looks like it could be Quincy Owusu-Abeyie.

United Chasing Fabregas
Two alleged bids for the former Arsenal player but it is unlikely to be resolved until the new Barca boss, Garardo Martino, decides who he wants and who he doesn't at the Nou Camp. Sure, Cesc would be a great signing for United but Zaha is better of course!

Real Bale
Tottenham are refuting claims that Real Madrid have made their interest known in Gareth Bale but they are in talks about a new contract.

Newcastle Resolve Cisse
It seem the whole sorry saga of Papa Cisse refusing to wear a shirt with Wonga on it for religous reasons is at an end. Pretty much as soon as he was spotted in a casino which clearing wasn't so much of a problem for him!

Suarez A Gooner
Rather surprisingly Arsenal appear to be stepping out of their own rules in a bid to lure the Liverpool striker to London. They need a striker for sure but Suarez? Really Arsene? Undoubted quality but the baggage will have it's own car if he makes the trip down for talks.

Jamaican Footballer Fails Drugs Test
No idea what is in the water over in Jamiaca but following hot in the footsteps of athletes Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson, a footballed has now failed a test. It was after the Honduras game on 11 June but the player has yet to be named.

Pre-Season Campaign
Last Saturday saw the first team squad beat Dagenham 2-1 in their first pre-season fixture. They followed that up on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win at Gillingham. Special mention to the Palace faithful who travelled in their numbers. Next up is Crawley away tomorrow afternoon.

Madrid Enjoy Seaside Trip
It was a 6-0 thrashing of Bournemouth for Real but that wasn't the talking point, neither was the rumoured £60 cost for a ticket. It was a young boy behind the goal who was hit on the arm by a Ronaldo free kick that went just over which ended up breaking his wrist. Quite the story to tell and I'm sure his friends won't get bored of hearing it!

Winter World Cup
FIFA are still banging on about this idea but you have to wonder why they ever gave it to Qatar if it was to encourage such a proposal. A winter Would Cup would simply play havoc with the majority on European leagues. This topic is expected to run for a while longer yet.
